"Maya! Max! Go!"

Maya was already at the edge, her eyes wide with terror. Max was nudging her, his nose pressed against her lower back, literally pushing her toward safety.

"I can't!" Maya cried, looking at the dark, churning water below. "The dress… it's too heavy!"

She was right. The velvet, now soaked with sea spray and sweat, weighed nearly thirty pounds. If she jumped, she'd sink like a stone.

I reached them just as the second burst of gunfire shredded the pier five feet behind us. There was no time to unbutton the dress. I reached for my boot knife, the blade flashing in the firelight.

"Trust me, Maya," I whispered.

I sliced through the thick, reinforced velvet. I didn't care about the documents anymore. I didn't care about the evidence. I cared about the girl. I ripped the dress off her shoulders, the heavy garment falling away like a shed skin, revealing a simple white cotton slip underneath.

"Now, jump!"

I grabbed Maya and the boy, pulling them into my chest, and we leaped into the abyss.

The water was a shock of ice. It punched the air out of my lungs, and for a moment, the weight of my own wet clothes threatened to drag me down. I kicked hard, my boots feeling like lead weights, until my head broke the surface.

"Maddie!" I gasped, treading water and holding both children above the waves.

The Selkie swung around, the low hull dipping as Maddie leaned over the side. She grabbed the boy first, hauling him up with a strength born of years of handling terrified animals. Then she reached for Maya.

"I've got you, sweetheart. I've got you," Maddie breathed.

I looked back at the pier.

Max was still there.

"MAX! JUMP!" I screamed.
